Sichuan Opera Face Change: A Cultural Experience

Discover the magic of Sichuan Opera in this interactive program featuring the dazzling "face-changing" technique. Through live demonstrations, vibrant Chinese opera costumes, and storytelling, students will learn about the history and cultural significance of this iconic Chinese art form. Participants will engage with the teaching artist Bill Chen through fun, hands-on activities like practicing movements and expressions. Perfect for grades K-12, this assembly brings the richness of Chinese culture to life. A mini magic show will be presented at the end of each assembly.

  Hao Bill Chen is a versatile performing artist who combines traditional Chinese performance art with modern forms of expression. Bill studied under the master face-changer BoFeng Zhang in Chengdu City, China. He is famous for his superb Sichuan Opera face-changing skills, which can change the mask in an instant to perform dramatic visual effects. Sichuan Opera face-changing requires not only precise techniques and superb skills, but also a high degree of artistic accomplishment. With a deep understanding and proficiency in this traditional art, he also brings audiences a variety of magic skills, including stage magic and close-up magic, and can let the audience experience mysterious and surprising moments through clever props and techniques. Whether in large or large gatherings, he can always attract the audience's attention with his personal magic talent and create a mysterious and pleasant atmosphere for the performance. Bill is a native of Flushing, Queens, having gone to PS22Q, where he studied dance with FTH’s teaching artist Angela Rostick.
